Writing for Cabinet Magazine Sabrina Gschwandtner has authored “A Brief History of String,” which describes Harry Smith’s work with string figures. Gschwandtner writes: “When Smith died he left behind a thousand-page manuscript, a collection of string figure patterns mounted on black board, and a box of index cards related to his research. On each card, Smith notated the method for making the string figure, along with a list of features (such as ‘the string figure has three diamonds’).”
