On March 6th at @museumtinguely there is a free event celebrating the book lauch of String Figures: A Cultural Practice Between Art, Anthropology, and Theory!

String figures have been studied as an aesthetic practice, collected as artifacts, and considered as a non-Western way of thinking. Looking at ways of playing together on the ruins of our history, the book brings together these different threads and weaves connections between world regions and disciplines in order to re:search, re:define and re:signify the past and present of a beautiful and complex cultural practice. The book features works by Harry Smith that explore the historical complexity of string figures and contributions by HSA Director Rani Singh, amongst others.

Speakers: Seraina Dür and Jonas Gillmann, Ute Holl, Robyn McKenzie, and Nasser Mufti.
Like many in our community, we would like to pay t Like many in our community, we would like to pay tribute to the late, great, David Johansen! From the New York Dolls to Buster Poindexter, DJ was always the consummate performer. Later in his career, he fronted David Johansen and the Harry Smiths in which he paid homage to Harry and his Anthology of American Folk Music.

Funny, sharp, and always on point, DJ was always agreeable to sitting for an interview or performing on our behalf. He spoke eloquently about the depth and power of the Anthology's songs in the documentary film "The Old Weird America."

Johansen was a key part of Hal Willner's Harry Smith Project (seen here performing Jim Jackson's "Old Dog Blue), performing in LA, London and New York at the height of the release of the Harry Smiths' two albums (2000 and 2002). His most recent show supporting the HSA was at the Brooklyn Folk Festival in 2023. R.I.P.

Can a song save a building? Find out how a prohibition-era audio recording that was an unlikely inclusion on the most important folk music compilations of all time, combined with community action saved the building that was once known as the Victoria Theater in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Now reborn as 825 Arts, the building is providing a much-needed community art and gathering space.

“You have to live Mahagonny, in fact be Mahagonn “You have to live Mahagonny, in fact be Mahagonny in order to work on it.” — Harry Smith

One week from today in Los Angeles! We are teaming up with the venerable @academymuseum to present a screening of Harry Smith's Film #18, Mahagonny as part of the Academy's Available Space series.

Mahagonny is an allegory of contemporary life; it explores the needs and desires of man amid the rituals of daily life in New York City. Smith’s New York, like Mahagonny, is a place where everything is permitted, and the only sin is not having enough money.

Please join us at 7:30 pm on Thursday, September 12th in the Ted Mann Theater where we will watch the 4K restoration, complete with intros from @rani_singh22 & @voyaexplotar .

Tickets available thru link in bio or on the Academy website.

We couldn't be more thrilled to announce a very special screening of the new 4K restoration of Harry Smith’s Film #18, Mahagonny at the @academymuseum on Thursday, September 12th at 7:30 pm.

A film 10 years in the making, Mahagonny became an obsession of Harry's, with shots meticulously ordered according to a complex numerological and symbolic system.

Images of daily life in New York City interspersed with cameos of important avant-garde figures such as Allen Ginsberg, Patti Smith, and Jonas Mekas are all synced to the sounds of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.

Screenings of Mahagonny are rare, and tickets are available now - link in bio!
