New Directions in Animation: Harry Smith and Storm de Hirsch

The University of Chicago presents an evening of avant-garde films from the 1960s including Heaven and Earth Magic, Peyote Queen and Third Eye Butterfly.

Beginning around 1940 in a style reminiscent of European forms of “visual music,” Harry Smith developed a stunning collage style that he employed to tell a bizarre, allegory of “the heroine’s toothache consequent to the loss of a very valuable watermelon, her dentistry and transportation to heaven.” The films of De Hirsch, one of the few major female animators of avant-garde, utilize techniques of animation and live-action to create utterly unique, bracing visual style.
